PUTRAJAYA: The Immigration Department has denied that its officers had detained Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim upon his return from Istanbul at the KL International Airport Tuesday. Department enforcement director Datuk Ishak Mohamed said Anwar was not stopped or questioned by immigration officers as he had claimed.
He said upon arrival, Anwar had gone through the normal counter check.
“Nobody stopped him. Malaysians are not questioned upon arrival at the airport by the Immigration. Our officers only check and question foreigners entering the country,” he said.
Ishak, however, said that he was unaware if any other authorities had questioned Anwar.
In Kuala Lumpur, Anwar’s private secretary Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad claimed Anwar was detained for 30 minutes by the Immigration Department on arrival at KLIA from Turkey.
Nik Nazmi claimed that an Immigration officer told Anwar that his name was on the Malaysian suspects list and they needed to check his passport and get clearance before allowing him in.
He also claimed that Anwar was held at the Immigration office before he was allowed to leave. No details were given when Anwar asked for the reason he was detained.
