Close call for students in bus crash

Monday January 7, 2008

IPOH: More than 30 students from Universiti Sains Malaysia had a close call when the bus they were travelling in developed faulty brakes on the North-South Expressway and crashed into a car on the opposite lane near the Ipoh Selatan toll plaza yesterday.

Their bus hit the divider before crashing into a Nissan Sentra on the opposite lane about 1km from the toll plaza at 6.15pm.

According to the students, 14 of them, including the two drivers, sustained light injuries and sought outpatient treatment at Ipoh Hospital.

They were on their way back to USM in Penang from a hiking expedition in Cameron Highlands when the bus driver realised that his brakes were not working and tried to slow down the vehicle by crashing into the divider.

Ipoh deputy traffic chief Asst Supt Razali Bakar said a 45-year-old female passenger in the car also suffered minor injuries.
