RM8.3bil already spent under 9MP, says Samy

KUALA LUMPUR: The Works Ministry has spent RM8.3bil, or 43.8%, of the RM20bil allocated to it under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP) for infrastructure projects.

Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said yesterday that RM5bil was spent last year and RM3.7bil was expected to be spent by end of this year.

He was clarifying his earlier statement on Monday that the ministry had spent about 75% of its 9MP allocation.

“The RM3.7bil only made up 75% of the expenditure for 2007 and we hope to utilise all the allocation for the year before the year ends,” he said in a statement here.

He said the Public Works Department (PWD) would advertise tenders for several infrastructure projects in local newspapers from time to time.

“The PWD is monitoring projects which have been tendered out and I'm studying the report and progress of the projects,” he added.

All state governments have also appointed their representatives to monitor the progress of projects under the 9MP, Samy Vellu said. – Bernama
