Penang Bridge safe to use, says Samy

KUALA LUMPUR: There are no worrying cracks on the Penang Bridge that can compromise the safety of the structure, Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said here yesterday.

“The bridge structure is strong and people can use it any time without worry,” he said.

Samy Vellu was commenting on Sungai Dua assemblyman Datuk Jasmin Mohamed's allegation at the Penang state assembly on Tuesday that there were serious cracks on the bridge.

Samy Vellu said the engineering consultants had also certified the strength of the structure and the safety of the bridge.

“Penang Bridge Sdn Bhd, the operator of the bridge, also regularly monitors to ensure the bridge is safe for all vehicles,” he said.

He said expansion work, including piling, was carried out cautiously to meet specifications and safety standards.

“The piling works will not affect the structure of the existing bridge,” he added.
