Malaysian arrested in south Thailand

MYT 9:21:49 PM

ALOR STAR: A Kelantanese man has been arrested in a military raid in Narathiwat, Southern Thailand.

He and another seven Thai nationals were rounded up during the raid in a suspected insurgent hideout in Sungai Kolok on Saturday.

Malaysian vice-consul in Songkhla Mohd Hadtamizi Abu Bakar confirmed that a Malaysian was now in the custody of Thai authorities.

“We were informed that he will be detained for seven days (to facilitate investigations),” he said when contacted Monday.

It is learnt that an officer from the consulate would be visiting the Kelantanese detainee Wednesday. Bernama quoted Thai Army spokesman Col Akara Thiproj as saying that 29-year-old Malaysian Muhammad Aswan Abdul Rahman would be held for seven days at Inkayut Army Camp in Pattani.

Akara said that Muhammad Aswan could have relatives in Southern Thailand, or he could have been to the area for the Loy Krathong festival.

Thai military believe that the house where Muhammad Aswan arrested was a hideout for small group of militants who were part of Ronda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) movement.

RKK members had been blamed for sporadic violence in restive Southern Thailand.
